A lot of the waste occurs at farm level, where wet fruit pulp and wastewater pollute soil and groundwater. Farmers struggle to make a living from coffee sales, yet they do not utilize the whole fruit, wasting 9 million tonnes of fruit pulp annually.

The coffee fruit contains high-value ingredients, but today it is impossible to extract these from the coffee cascara.

By identifying, evaluating, and screening the potential of coffee cascara, this project aims to generate new value and income opportunities.

The project started in February 2022. Currently, cascara is being analyzed.
